he
name Morrone traces
its origin to the antique word maronea whose etym means “rock”. Therefore,
Morrone is appropriately named given that the town is built on a rocky spur.
In ancient times other denominations were used such as: Murronis, Marone,
and Murrone.
Many think the name Morrone comes from the word morra (an ear of grain)
on the basis that the area surrounding Morrone is a big wheat producer.
Such a hypothesis is lacking, however, any scientific foundations. In the
past, Morrone has been confused by some historians with Morrone (then Castelmorrone),
a town situated in the province of Caserta.
The Royal Decree of January 22, 1863, authorized the denominational change
of Morrone to Morrone del Sannio.
